Honest, unpretentious comfort food and stiff drinks. Independent bar+diners like this are a dying breed in Portland, so I hope My Father's Place stays open forever. The staff is friendly and chill; they'll take good care of you without hovering. Don't miss the corned beef hash! Omelets are also excellent.
I would definitely come back here! I'm a picky eater especially when it involves biscuits and gravy! I got the country breakfast with a few eggs, patty, biscuits and gravy, and hash browns. I also tried the liver and onion dish and unless you love cow liver, I would not recommend haha. The cow liver taste and smell was so strong. After ordering your food at the bar, you receive a number and it takes about 20-40 minutes to receive your food. The atmosphere is extremely busy, inviting, and friendly! They also hold stand up comedy shows here, which are okay but it's something to do while you're waiting for your food.
All-day breakfast is one of the most important American institutions and My Father's Place sets the gold standard for menu versatility, chill vibes, indifference in the face of danger and fashion sense. Great food. The recent playlists have been bold portals into what I can best describe as electric tango with trip hop ala Thievery Corporation. RyAnn and the other hostees are beautiful, spirited folk with a passion for quality service. More importantly, they are incredibly fun and stylish. I believe the energy in this space is healthy and it reminds me why I'm so pleased to call this city home. Thank you for the wonderful service, good job.
If you have followed along with my reviews, you know that I'm a dive bar FANATIC. My Father's Place was a happy mistake of a discovery, as it was right next to my hotel when I was in town. When my Lyft dropped me off at my hotel I could see the dim lighting and multicolored Christmas lights along the ceiling at the bar and just KNEW I would be stopping in. I checked out their website before heading in because I wanted to know more, and this place really checks all the boxes for people who like the no-frills bars. Open year round, serves breakfast all day, and most importantly, heavy pours and strong drinks. My kind of place. Bartenders here are kind without pestering you too much, but always ready to help when you need them. They didn't have a giant selection of hazy's but I can't complain, because they had a beer or two I was a fan of. My usual shot of tequila was poured very generously and to my delight, their pickle juice for picklebacks is DELICIOUS and not that fake atomic neon green stuff some bars pass off as pickle juice. IYKYK. To cap off the night I got a steak quesadilla to go and it was the perfect snack to close out the evening. Definitely dive bar food, but it hit the spot. Overall, if I was a PDX native, I would be here on a regular basis. Definitely go if you get the chance to swing on in (and if this sounds like your vibe).
I've never been much of a chicken fried steak guy but this one was pretty good. Not your typical restaurant but a lot of comfort foods on the menu. Decent bar vibe with a distinct look and the service you'd expect. My biggest gripe was the juke box didn't have many of the songs that I've played in bars like this, using the AMI app. Like no bad bunny or anything with Spanish words, what's up with that?
Classic diner food with breakfast served all day, a family friendly side with that true diner vibe, a bar side that really feels like your ideal neighborhood bar + quirky eclectic pdx gems, and a game area that includes tv's + pool tables + pinball machines (my favorite). All of the hosts I've had the pleasure of meeting have been very accommodating and kind regardless of how under staffed they may be. I will use this platform to call to attention they need more help with staffing. MFP staff are excellent under pressure and exhaustion. My new favorite.
An absolute no-frills dive bar with a knack for serving some great diner food. Came in at 1:00a after 14 hours of driving and delusion. Had a great 16oz of beer(or 3) alongside a pretty solid French Dip. Smoked a drag with some touring HxC band from out east. Decided to walk back across the bridge with no regrets and a full stomach. This all happened about a year ago now. So why write this now, 12 months later and 1000 miles away? Because I remember all of those details so fondly. Because it's worth remembering. A good restaurant may bow to your entitlement. A great restaurant is unapologetic for its food and its identity. It'll show you a good time and you can decide whether to roll with the tide or refuse the current. Thanks My Father's Place, see you again soon.
My 4 star criteria might not jibe with yours but if you're down with fresh cooked breakfasts at good portions with reasonable prices served with a smile and/or a smart-ass remark, then we can talk. It's definitely not anybody's idea of a highfalutin brunch spot; it could just be a downscale low-lit Dennys with a rock n roll vibe or - maybe more accurately - a dive bar with a breakfast obsession, but either way it works. Another bonus? The place is bipolar, with a bright retro diner tableau on one side and a dark, loungey old-school cafe feel on the other side (see above description). That's where I sit. And even if the coffee is your basic watery diner fare, I'll still vouch for the awesome egg scrambles. So good. It's a throwback to an older, less-shiny Portland, stuffed with eclectic decor and set on the bottom floor of a worn old building right on gritty Grand Ave. The joint has character (and characters) and to me that's reason enough to support it. Oh, and the place is open late - at which point it just turns into a dive bar. Which is no bad thing.
When you are hungry at midnight there are some options especially when you live in Portland. Bars need to serve food to keep selling alcohol - so bars will have always a bite. But fathers is a bit different it's a diner that also have a bar. Good thing you can have the full menu the whole day - even breakfast. I decided for pork chops and a side of salad. Impressive was the speed of service. The salad came almost immediately together with the ice tea. Good start. The pork chop came not even six minutes later. It tasted all fine - it missed some finesses but for a late meal it was all fine. The pork it self was a bit over but not to a mess and it had a good pan roast taste to it. The mashed might be of a package, the gravy was not just a blob so that was fitting. The veggies had some bite left. The garlic baguette could have been a bit longer in the offen but it was a good garlic taste. After all nothing special how mother would make it - but father did well!
